Review - Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins

Published by Simon and Schuster Childrens Books
Published on 1 April 2010

In the wake of a love spell gone horribly wrong, Sophie Mercer, a sixteen-year-old witch, is shipped off to Hecate Hall, a boarding school for witches, shapeshifters and faeries. The traumas of mortal high school are nothing compared to the goings on at "Freak High." It's bad enough that she has to deal with a trio of mean girls led by the glamorous Elodie, but it's even worse when she begins to fall for Elodie's gorgeous boyfriend, Archer Cross, and frankly terrifying that the trio are an extremely powerful coven of dark witches. But when Sophie begins to learn the disturbing truth about her father, she is forced to face demons both metaphorical and real, and come to terms with her own growing power as a witch.

I have been waiting for Hex Hall to be released for far too long, and it's finally here.  You know how sometimes you anticipate something for a while, and then when you actually get it, it's a little anti-climatic? Yeah? Well, that so was not the case for Hex Hall.  I absolutely loved this novel and to say that Rachel is a debut novelist is amazing.

Hex Hall is saturated with snark, sass and humor, it made me laugh out loud, giggle like a lunatic and made me nostalgic for the days when I would swoon over a boy just because he could raise one of his eyebrows.  Okay, I admit it, I still swoon over that even now, and i'm a grown up.  This story will appeal to fans who love sarcasm mixed with their supernatural.  Plus an array of characters spanning from witches, vampires, faeries and my favourite, werewolves.

Sophie as a character is everything you could hope for in a protagonist.  She's relatable, funny and sometimes so clueless it's endearing.  Sometimes when she made a very obvious mistake, you laughed along with her because thats just the kind of person Hawkins has created, someone you wish was your friend.  Even though she was a little silly sometimes, she knew she needed to learn to get better and took her predicament into her own hands and did something about it.  She wasn't afraid to ask for help or guidance.  She is a protagonist you root for from the very first page.

The plot was fast paced and original, with lots of plot twists and turns to keep you on your toes, I found myself fully engrossed.  Hawkins has created a paranormal world that I would love to live in, one that you can immerse yourself in completely, and enjoy the ride.

I would recommend this book to everyone.  For someone who has never before published a novel to build this world and make it so that you want to come back for more is outstanding.  This book will rock your socks off and leave you waiting for the sequel, so you can hex it up once more.
